README This is for the display_speech folder. The contents of this folder are now contained in the display_speech folder for Chapter 10. In other words the contents of this folder have been moved to a higher level so that this application can be more easily accessed. The instructions in the text still apply. However, the user no longer needs to strike any key after loading the first speech file. The user can load one speech file and then play the file, view the spectrogram, zoom-in or zoom-out, etc. Be sure that the zoom-in is at level one, that is that the zoom-in level is at the original file level, before a second speech file is loaded, etc. The display_speech software is intended to assist the comparison of speech file of the same or nearly the same length, such as an original file and a synthesized file. However, the software can accommodate speech files of different length since it now appends zeros to the files to make them the same length. Thus, the user needs to be patient when loading the second, third, etc. files because the software is making some calculations to set all loaded speech files to the same length by appending zeros to the data if necessary. The data will be plotted after the file is loaded. One other precaution is to not press the play button to quickly after an initial press of the play button. Let the first play finish before pressing the play button a second time. The computer needs to complete communication with the sound board before a second play request is received, otherwise an error message is printed in the Matlab command window. However, this is not a fatal error, only a message that says in effect that the sound board is busy and that the user must wait until it is ready for the next request.
