Welcome to the CD-ROM disc that accompanies: James W. Haefner. 2005. "Modeling Biological Systems: Principles and Applications." Springer. NY. This CD comprises a set of programs and explanatory text. The text portion can be viewed in either "MBSCD-screen.pdf" or "MBSCD-print.pdf". The former is designed to be viewed on a computer screen and features interactive links to view and download the code. This is the preferred method to access the disc. The second pdf file has the same information, but is intended to be printed. If the CD contents are being viewed in a GUI-based file manager that associates file types with viewing applications, simply click on the appropriate pdf file. Otherwise, run the application (e.g., Acrobat Reader) independently and open the MBS-CD pdf file. The source code is available in C, Octave, and Matlab formats. Currently, the most complete set of programs are written in C. More examples in Octave and Matlab will be available in the future. Check this URL for the most recent version: http://bioweb.usu.edu/jhaefner/MBS-CDROM/index.html LINUX Users: The C and Octave code was developed in Linux, so these programs are immediately useable by you. Instructions for obtaining and installing the required ancillary packages are on the CD in Chapter 9. MICROSOFT WINDOWS Users: The C code is readily accessible to you thanks to the efforts of the open-source software community of programmers. Read Chapters 6 and 9 for instructions. The free scripting language Octave is also available to you, but it requires the installation of packages that are not described here. Matlab (not free) is primarily a Microsoft Windows-based application, so that is the best option if you wish to use an interpreted (non-compiled) scripting language and can afford the price.
