Release Notes, Flashscan30, Version 1.5 (B2): -------------------------------------------------------------- These floppies contain Version 1.5, Beta 2 of the Flashscan Imager Software. This distribution includes: + Flashscan30 Application + Roadrunner Card Driver and Utilities. Note, Flashscan30 software is intended for use with the newer Flashscan30 imagers. Flashscan30 imagers are sometimes refered to as "PizzaBox"imagers. Flashscan20 (ver. 1.4) is intended for use with the Flashscan20 imagers (also known as MIEK imagers). Before you Install: ------------------------- In general, you should only have one version of Flashscan software installed on you machine at one time. This limitation exists because different versions of flashscan will use the same registry entries to establish the default directory and settings for the Bitflow camera configuration files. To Install Version 1.5 (B2): ------------------------------------- (1) Remove earlier versions of Flashscan. If you have version 1.4 or later installed, you can use the un-install script to remove the software. Follow the instructions in the readme.txt file in the Flashscan directory installed with that software. If you have version 1.3 or earlier, or if you do not know the version, we recommend you simply delete the Flashscan directory using NT Explorer. (2) Log in as a user with Administrator privileges. This is required as this installation will install the Roadrunner board driver into \drivers. (3) Insert the distribution disk, and run the application "setup.exe". This application will guide you through installation. (4) You will need to restart your computer if this is the first time that Flashscan has been installed. This is necessary to allow the Roadrunner board driver to start. (5) A new program group, "Flashscan30", will be added to Program group under the Start menu. To Uninstall Version 1.5 (B2): ----------------------------------------- (1) Log in as a user with Administrator privileges. (2) Open the NT control panel. (3) Open the "Add/Remove Programs" control. (4) Select "Flashscan30 (Version 1.5b)". (5) Press the Add/Remove button, and confirm the choice. New in B2 Version ------------------------ The principle changes in version 1.5 B2 account for the increased sizeof Flashscan30 images and a new method for line noise suppression. These changes have affected hardware requirements for your PC platform and require modified procedures that we recommend for calibration, as compared with Flashscan20. Hardware requirements for 1.5 (B2): ------------------------------------------------- The most noticeable impact of these changes, and the The increased size of the Flashscan30 image, now 2304 x 3200 pixels, has greatly increased demand for memory. To avoid problems with memory allocation failures you must setup your machine to have at least 320 MByte of available memory (virtual + physical). The minimum recommended physical memory is 256 MByte. In addition, we recommend a page file size of approximately 100 MByte (use the "performance' tab of the "system" control in the control panel to view or adjust page file size). You can execute a system using 128MByte of physical memory with a 200 MByte page file, but performance will suffer dramatically due to page swapping. New Calibration Method: ---------------------------------- The calibration images will change until the unit reaches thermal equilibrium. .For best results leave the unit powered on for at least one hour before performing calibration. A dark image (no dose) must be taken first. This dark image is used for the baseline reference to remove line noise from the subsequent calibration images and image scans. To ensure a noise free dark field calibration image, use image averaging during capture of the dark field image. To turn on image averaging, (a) select this option from the Analysis pull down menu, (b) set the number of frames to average to 16, and then press"OK" (you must press OK). You then use the "scan" option of the "Dark Field" pull down menu to capture a dark field calibration image. Be sure the illumination mode is set to "continuous" for the dark field. After you have captured the dark field calibration image you should use the "Line Filter" option to enable (i.e. check) line filter noise suppression. The line filter works as follows: ----------------------------------------- A portion of the lanex screen which converts X-Rays to light is masked along one edge of the array so that part of the active area is not illuminated, regardless of x-ray exposure. When line filter is enabled the signal in this black reference band for each current image is compared with the black reference band of the dark field calibration image. An average difference within this band is calculated for each row of the image. This difference, which represents primarily row correlated noise, is then subtracted from the pixel values each row. By taking multiple images in the dark field, the line noise is reduced by averaging several frames together. The use of the line filter reduces the correlated line noise by roughly a factor of 3, and is recommended for best image quality. Note that the black reference band of pixels is not displayed in the calibration or scanned image windows. Known Problems ----------------------- The Flashscan30.INI file has several new parameters that are associated with the control of the Line Filter region. If these settings are changed you will need to re-capture the Dark, Mid and Light field calibration images. All NT installations are not the same. Some NT DLL's that have been needed for different machines have been included with the installation. These are in the "help" subdirectory of the Flashscan folder. If you experience problems starting the Flashscan30 application and the message complains of missing DLL's, please check if this DLL is available in the help directory. If it is, we suggest you COPY the DLL from the help directory into the directory containing the Flashscan30.exe file.
