README file for MO_GPS Demo

OVERVIEW
__________________________________________________________________
The MO_GPS sample program is intended to demonstrate the real-time
tracking and monitoring capabilities of MapObjects 2.0. The main
screen of the program is divided into five main areas:
the "Signal-to-Noise" ratio area
the "Satellite Geometry" area
the map display area
the "GPS Data" area
the "Target Information" area
The "Signal to Noise Ratio" portion of the screen consists of eight
vertical bars and eight numbers. Each number represents a satellite
being tracked, and the bar above it represents the relative signal
strength of that satellite.
The "Satellite Geometry" portion of the screen consists of moving
north arrow and up to eight satellite representations. Satellites
are presented as a small dot, with three lines of text showing the
satellite number, the azimuth to its location and the elevation
(above the horizon) to its location. There are also two dark green
concentric circles on this portion of the screen. The outer circle
represents the horizon in 360 degrees around the receiver, and the
inner circle represents an imaginary circle 45 degrees up from the
horizon. If the user is facing north, it is possible to locate
the general position of each satellite being tracked. Red satellites
represent a loss-of-signal condition. The arrow points toward the
direction of travel, AKA "Track Made Good".
The map display contains a DEM (.tif) of southern California as a base map.
Once satellites are being tracked, the GPS position is displayed on the map
in the form of a crosshair cursor.
The "GPS Data" region of the screen displays textual information from
the receiver.
The "Target Information" area displays the location, distance, azimuth and
back-azimuth to a target. To select a target, depress the crosshair button
on the toolbar and click on a point on the map. Target information is
updated as the position of the GPS changes.

The MO_GPS demo works in two modes: real-time and file-playback. It has
been tested with an older GARMIN 45, but should operate with any receiver
that can output NMEA via a data cable. NMEA has become a near-standard
among GPS manufacturers for real-time output, but not all receivers are
capable of sending a data stream in this mode. Also, Some vendors choose
not to implement certain portions of NMEA, which means that parts of this
demo may not work.
In file-playback mode, the demo reads a pre-recorded NMEA file. Such a
file exists in the /data directory called gpsfile.txt.
The MO_GPS demo was designed with a 600 X 800 screen in mind. If the host
machine has a resolution less than this, parts of the main form are not
visible.
Important!
******************************************************************************
* For this demo to work properly, two fonts should be installed on the host *
* machine: Lucida Console and Verdana. These fonts are freely available from *
* Microsoft and are also located in the /fonts directory. *
