Subject: ST's DK3420 USB Serial Emulator install and setup information. Version: Beta 1.0.0.5 Description: This readme file includes information on the Windows Setup Application, programming the DK3420 with the application firmware, and testing the USB serial emulator with Hyperterm. Installing the Setup Application on the PC: 1. Unzip Setup - DK3420 Serial Port Emulator - Beta Version.zip. 2. !!!MAKE SURE DK3420 IS NOT CONNECTED AT THIS TIME!!! 3. Run Setup - DK3420 Serial Port Emulator - Beta Version.exe 4. This application will: a) Install USB Virtual COM port drivers for USB Serial Port Emulator b) Copy USB drivers into the folder C:\Program Files\ST\USBuPSD\DK3420 Serial Port Emulator\drivers directory. The drivers in this directory are for reference. c) Copy USB drivers into the folder C:\Program Files\ST\USBuPSD\DK3420 Serial Port Emulator\Serial_Emu\drvr directory. These drivers are used for USB Serial Port Emulator installation(See Step 17 of next section). c) Copy DK3420_USB_SERIAL_EMULATOR.zip file into C:\Program Files\ST\USBuPSD\DK3420 Serial Port Emulator\fw directory. Unzip the file to view the source code of the firmware. d) Copy Hyperterm into C:\Program Files\ST\USBuPSD\DK3420 Serial Port Emulator\hyperT directory. A shortcut will be placed on the desktop if the option is checked. e) Copy project.obj into C:\Program Files\ST\USBuPSD\DK3420 Serial Port Emulator\obj directory. f) Copy this file, DK3420 USB Serial Emulator Readme.txt, into C:\Program Files\ST\USBuPSD\DK3420 Serial Port Emulator directory g) Install an uninstall application in C:\Program Files\ST\USBuPSD\DK3420 Serial Port Emulator directory. 5. This readme file, DK3420 USB Serial Emulator Readme.txt, will be displayed at the end of installation of the setup application if the option is selected. Programming the DK3420 with USB Serial Port Emulator Firmware using PSDSoft Express with an RLINK-ST (USB to JTAG dongle): The directory, "C:\Program Files\ST\USBuPSD\DK3420 Serial Port Emulator\obj", contains the run-time object file (project.obj) for the USB Serial Port Emulator - DK3420 demo. Using PSDsoft Express with an RLINK-ST, the run-time image can be programmed into the uPSD34xx device on the DK3420. To do so, follow the instructions below: 1. Make sure USB cable of RLINK-ST is NOT plugged into the PC. 2. Install the latest version of PSDsoft Express with support for the RLINK-ST dongle if it is not already installed. 3. Plug USB cable of RLINK-ST into the PC. 4. Launch PSDsoft Express. 5. Click cancel when asked to start a new or open an existing project. If a project is already open, close it. 6. Click on the JTAG ISP box in the Design Flow window to open up the JTAG-ISP Operations window. 7. In the box labeled Step 1, use the Browse button to select the OBJ file from the directory mentioned above to be programmed into the uPSD34xx. 8. Click on the HW Setup button at the bottom of the window to view the Hardware Settings. 9. Select RLINK in the Hardware Selection window if it is not already selected. 10.Click OK. 11.Make sure DK3420 is plugged into the PC and RLINK-ST is connected to it. 12.In the box labeled Step 2, click on the Execute button. 13.If the device is not blank, a message will pop up saying that the device is not blank. Click on Yes to do a full chip erase operation. 14.Various messages will appear in the log window as the device is programmed and verified. The final message will indicate that the program/verify operation is complete. 15.The application code is now programmed into the device and the uPSD34xx is executing the code. 16. The "Found New Hardware Wizard" dialog box should pop up indicating that Windows has detected the DK3420 as a USB Serial Port Emulator. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" option and click Next to continue. 17. Another dialog box will appear. Select "Search for the best driver in these locations." Make sure only the "Include this location in the search" option is selected. Click on the Browse button and select the folder "c:\Program Files\ST\USBuPSD\DK3420 Serial Port Emulator\Serial_Emu\drvr" directory. 18. Windows will now install the software and then pop up the "Completing the Found New Hardware Wizard" dialog box when complete. Click on Finish to close the wizard. 19. You can now test the USB Serial port emulator with Hyperterm by following the instruction given below. To test the USB Serial Port Emulator using Hyperterm: 1. Make sure DK3420 is connected to the PC. 2. Open the Device Manager and check under Ports. You should see the device STMicroelectronics USB Serial Port Emulator (COMx). Note down the COM port number. 3. Open Hyperterm. a. A new connection (Connection Description) dialog will pop up. b. Choose an Icon and type a name (for example, "test") c. A Connect To dialog will pop up with the name of the connection. d. Choose the COM port number (from Step 2) in the Connect Using drop down box of the Connect To dialog. e. The COM properties dialog will pop up. f. Select the maximum bits per second (921600), Databits - 8, Parity - None, Stop bits - 1, Flow Control - None and click OK. g. You should see a welcome message as below with ST> prompt. WELCOME!!! STMicroelectronics Inc. USB Serial Port Emulator - DK34xx Press any key to get an echo back !!! ST> h. Go to File-Properties and click on the settings tab. i. Click on the ASCII Settings button and check "Send line ends with line feeds" check box and click OK. 6. The character you type is sent via USB to the device and echoed back by the device over USB to Hyperterm over the "Virtual COM Port" Note: You can use the KEIL compiler and debugger to download the code. But the firmware code size is greater than 2K, so if you are using an EVAL version of KEIL, DOWNLOAD THE CODE WITHOUT HITTING THE COMPILE BUTTON!! !!!!KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE DRIVER!!!! If you disconnect the device when Hyperterm is connected and plug it back, you will not be able to connect. Disconnect Hyperterm, disconnect the device, plug the device back in and connect Hyperterm. This is due to the known limitation of the virtual COM driver.
