3D Cross Section Plugin for NASA WorldWind 1.4 or above (maybe...) Terrain Viewer Version 1.4, february 24, 2007 Patrick Murris, http://www.alpix.com/3d/worldwin/ http://www.alpix.com/3d/TerrainViewer/ What ---- The 3D Cross Section plugin allows to 'cut out' a square section of terrain and examine it in a separate 3D window - the terrain viewer, with various coloring schemes and effects. Each section is named and can be reviewed later using the terrain viewer alone. The viewer can also display WW SRTM cached tiles, just by dropping one in the window. Install ------- 1. You need WW 1.4 (as of today). 2. Unzip in your WW Plugins directory. That should add a folder named '3DCrossSection'. 3. Start WW and the new plugin should be listed in Plug-ins->Load/Unload. Select the plugin and click 'Load'. It should turn green. 4. Once loaded, it becomes an option in the Plugins menu. Usage ----- 1. Navigate to the place you want to cut out - with a vertical view. 2. Select Plugins / 3D Cross section to select the area. 3. Adjust the selection size and heading, move the terrain and recenter... 4. Select the DEM (terrain) size and an optional texture from one of WW layers. 5. Enter a file name with no extension Ex: "My_Terrain", enter a short description. 6. Click 'View selection' and be ready to wait a bit... 7. Once the terrain viewer comes up, you can examine the terrain section as in WW and change the color schemes and viewing options by using the menus. Mouse : * Mouse wheel : move closer or away from the map * Mouse left button and drag : move the map * Mouse right button and drag : tilt and rotate the map * Both mouse buttons and drag : move the light source Keyboard : * + / - : move closer or away from the map * Shift + / - : change camera field of view (zoom) * Ctrl + / - : change terrain vertical elevation factor * Up / down arrows : move back and forth * Left / right arrows : rotate the map * Shift left / right arrows : move sideways * Shift up / down arrows : change map tilt * F / Shift F : turns the fog on and off * L / Shift L : turns the light on and off (shading) * Ctrl L : compute the shadows (may take some time and only works with textured terrain) * Ctrl Shift L : remove the shadows * Enter / Space bar : turns auto rotation (slow spin) on and off Uninstall --------- 1. Delete the directory Program Files/NASA/World Wind 1.3/Plugins/3DCrossSection Notes ----- * Known issues Extracting large DEMs and large images can take several minutes and may come out incomplete. Large DEMs need WW to have loaded in memory hi res terrain data to provide the requested resolution to build the exported DEM. If this data is not available in WW at that point, the exported terrain may contain 'flat' areas. Large images (2048x2048) require WW to have in it s cache the appropriate levels needed to assemble the exported texture. If some tiles are missing, they will come out as 'white' areas. To export succesfully large terrain sections with large textures, it is a good idea to spend some time navigating at low altitude over the area to be exported to make sure both SRTM (DEM) data are loaded in memory and hi res images are in the cache. * Using the terrain viewer alone The TerrainViewer.exe in the Plugins/3DCrossSection/ folder, can be used as a stand alone application to examine and display limited portions of terrain with different color schemes. Terrain sections exported from WW can be loaded via the File menu, Load... option. Map description .xml files can also be dropped onto the viewer window. It can also be used to view SRTM .bil files from World Wind cache - Cache/Earth/SRTM/ Just drop them over the viewer. It will infere the lat/lon coordinates of the tiles from their path and file name, and produce an accurate othoprojection. More information at http://www.alpix.com/3d/TerrainViewer/ * SRTM data copyright According the "NASA/NGA MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING" regarding SRTM data used in WW, there is no restriction to their distribution. "Raw radar data, terrain height data of 1 second of arc latitude and longitude( ie. Level-2 data sets), and strip DEMs with 30-meter spatial resolution over the United States may be released and distributed without restrictions." http://www2.jpl.nasa.gov/srtm/mou.html * Many thanks to Erik Newman aka withak, for writing most of the 'terrain extractor' plugin that makes half of this package. * Open source, public domain Source can be found in TerrainExtractor.cs and the source/ folder for the viewer. Feel free to use, abuse, divert and copy any part of it. Thats how I got started. Many thanks to the WorldWind community for their efforts and feedback, especialy Bjorn Reppen (http://www.mashiharu.com/) for his plugin architecture, usefull tips and inspiring examples.
